MIMIS Research Assistant

MIMIS, Measuring and Identifying Multilevel Influences on Sleep, is a study on Latino children ages 10-12 examining what affects their sleep. Because Latino children have high rates of obesity, Dr. Selena Nguyen Rodriguez began a study on one of the factors of obesity; sleep. As a research assistant, I participated in community outreach events/recruitment, consenting families in English and Spanish at their homes, and reaching out to community organizations for partnerships and recruitment at their sites. The data portion of my work consisted of scoring and cleaning diet, sleep, and survey data entries, scheduling/helping during focus groups, and checking for completeness of forms collected. I assisted with the previous phase of the project, DREAM, by helping with data entry and cleaning, and tracking missing data.

As a result of my time as a research assistant, I was able to improve my skills in community outreach, prioritizing deadlines, data entry, and being detail-oriented. I was able to connect with community organizations to coordinate the project's recruitment efforts./recruitment, consenting families in English and Spanish at their homes, and reaching out to community organizations for partnerships and recruitment at their sites. UKLEJA Student Researcher

The UKLEJA Center focuses on creating ethical leaders at CSULB. One of its pillars is advancing research in ethics. I was a student research ambassador for their first student-led collaborative research project on issues CSULB students currently face. My portion of this project focused on the ethics students face with a communicable disease such as the flu. I researched this topic using the ethical decision making model and then used the information to develop questions for a survey. Unfortunately, the project was cut short.
