PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Environmental Scientist September 2023 – Present

CA Safer Consumer Products Program, DTSC, Cypress, CA

• Manage deadlines and coordinate team assignments for up to four projects, and team member on up to five additional projects simultaneously

• Involved in ongoing efforts to advance environmental justice in the program, including co-drafting SCP’s first environmental justice initiative and creating external engagement best practices

• Research and write scientific and technical reports, determine adverse impacts to vulnerable communities, prepare briefing and workshop presentations, and write plain-language factsheets at 8th grade reading level for major projects

Field Researcher July 2023 - September 2023

UCLA Public Health School 

Project: Pacoima Sleep and Heat Study

• Interviewed households and explained data collection procedures to participants to gather neighborhood, housing, and sleep data in a disadvantaged community (Pacoima, CA) in English and Spanish

• Created standard operating procedures for data collection on RedCap software, recruited participants, entered and cleaned data, and created informational materials based on the data analysis to report back to the community

• Proofread content for the World Air Quality Report and conducted quality control on the AirVisual data map

• Assisted with data analysis of air quality monitoring systems 

 

Teaching Assistant September 2022 – March 2023

UCLA Public Health School 200A and 200B Course

• Facilitated and lead group discussions about environmental health in a class of 130 graduate students 

• Collaborated with professors from various public health disciplines to enhance student learning, answer questions during discussion sections, and assist with grading papers and exams

 

Climate Justice Fellow May 2022 – December 2022

Climate Resolve, Los Angeles, CA

• Designed a participatory science activity using various instruments to measure heat, surface temperature,  air pollution, and sound levels

• Piloted a participatory science activity with a group of 10 people in Boyle Heights 

• Researched and compiled information around land use practices, economic data, vehicle miles traveled, and public health effects of environmental justice issues

• Wrote newsletter content, social media assets, and policy action alerts using Canva and Salsa Labs. Assisted the communication team with updating the website on Wordpress

• Provided technical assistance to support the organization’s climate justice goals

• Managed a caseload of 2300 Medi-Cal applicants while providing caring and effective service

• Provided home visitation services to high-risk families with children aged 0-5 in South Central LA including parents with mental health illness, substance use history, disabilities, court involvement, and domestic violence

• Individualized Parents as Teachers (PAT) curriculum lessons to families

• Tracked children’s developmental progress, assessed family strengths and barriers, created family goals, advocated and referred families to community resources, and documented services onto an electronic database and paper file

Project: Measuring and Identifying Multilevel Influences on Sleep (MIMIS)

• Supported two research studies exploring multiple influences on obesity in Latinx children 10-12

• Led survey data entry, managed the MIMIS Facebook page, and fostered relationships with organizations for community-based recruitment and partnerships

• Entered 200+ data entries for diet recalls, sleep data, and surveys using multiple software, recruited and consented participants in English and Spanish, and moderated focus groups

• Facilitated focus groups and collected qualitative data for the study

• Improved accuracy of project data and increased engagement with community organizations

• Conduct community outreach to local youth at schools and community events, administer surveys, and summarize key findings for district supervisors

• Aided with data collection for the city’s annual Tobacco Enforcement Youth Purchase Survey

• Ensured safe store environments for youth and gathered store specific information for approximately 10 stores

• Collaborated with environmental specialists and youth to track tobacco sales to underage youth
